“Does your new wife know about this? I can’t imagine she’d be happy if she found out her oh so special mate wants another woman,” I say, pinning a hard glare on Andy. I have half of a mind to march into the hallway and tell her myself.
I’d hate to break apart her happiness, but no one deserves trash like Andy.
“You’re not the same as her,” Andy tells me, grabbing my arm again in desperation. His brows arch up, and a smile tilts his mouth, a sign he’s trying to get me to believe him.
“What’s different?”
Andy’s heads lift, his face paling when he sees Nolan behind me. I glance back, expecting to see both the father and the daughter, but Chloe didn’t return yet.
In that moment, as Nolan narrows his eyes on Andy, Andy jumps up and releases my arm, moving quickly back to his seat. He stutters, his words coming out shaky and unsure.
“Um, N–Nolan. I-”
Nolan’s calm exterior falls away, and he moves between me and Andy.
“You better keep your married status in mind. If I find that you dare to make Chloe sad, you won’t want to know your end,” Nolan threatens, his tone like steel. A shiver runs down my spine, and I sink back into my chair. His aura is so intense.
Andy pales to a deathly white as he also sinks into his chair.
“Y–You know about…” Andy’s eyes bounce from Nolan to me then back to Nolan, and he realizes that Nolan knows about our previous relationship.
The audible gulp from Andy has me smirking behind my hand. He should be afraid. Nolan knows more than most people, which means he has a chance to find out if Andy is hiding anything. Now that he heard Andy propositioning me, I’m sure Nolan will keep a closer eye on his son–in–law.
“Oh, honey, are you feeling unwell?” Chloe’s voice breaks the tension in the room, and everyone watches her move to Andy’s side. She presses a palm to his head, muttering, “We should get you home.”
Nolan and I watch the two leave, standing in silence. An idea for a gift pops into my head, so I grab my phone, typing out a reminder so I don’t forget.
“What are you thinking about?”
“I had an idea for Princess Chloe’s gift.”
His brow rises in question, and he’s about to say something when my phone rings in my hand. Billy’s name flashes on the screen.
“Hey, Billy.”

“Hey, Fiona. I made progress on the investigation,” he tells me, and hope fills my chest. “Can we meet face to face to discuss it?”
“Yes! I would love that. We can meet Friday after I get off work.”
“Alright. I’ll send you the location.”
After hanging up, I realize I’m smiling, and Nolan is staring. His full gaze makes me fidget.
“Was that the man from the bar?” He finally speaks, and surprise hits me. He remembers? I didn’t think it was important enough for him to recall. “What are you two going to do?”
I don’t want to expose the investigation until I have more proof, so I lift my chin and answer him as confidently and respectfully as possible, “Are you prying into my personal life, King Nolan? I recall you saying employers and employees should not interfere with each other’s privacy.”
As the words come out, I pray he doesn’t get angry.
Staring at me, Nolan clears his throat and straightens his suit.
“I just don’t want to watch you get ripped off,” he responds curtly. The emotionless expression falls back into place, and he nods. “We should go. As my secretary, you will be driving me home.”
“ME?” I squeak. Nolan turns to me, his eyes assessing me, and I freeze. I was going to refuse, but I don’t want him to look down
on me. I can’t look like fool in front of him.
