Chapter 20
Finding a gift for someone you don’t truly know is difficult. I don’t want to choose something, and it turns out that she hates it.
I’d be fired for sure.
“Fiona.”
I jump and spin around to find Nolan standing behind me.
“Y–yes? I was just…” I glance at my computer screen and cringe. I must look like a complete stalker.
“I am meeting Chloe and her husband for dinner, and I want you to come along.”
“Excuse me?” I must have heard him wrong. There’s no way he just invited me to dinner.
Nolan steps forward and repeats himself, “You’re coming to dinner.”
I want to refuse, but the stern glint in his eyes tells me I won’t win this argument. I’d really rather not see Andy and his new wife.
Actually, I don’t want to see him at all, but especially if they’re acting all lovely together.
“You’ll come because it will give you insight on my daughter and the things she likes. Choosing a gift will be more efficient if you
meet face to face,” he adds, making me look up at him again. That little sneak.
I know exactly what he’s doing, but I can’t refuse. Refusing could mean losing my job, plus, I don’t want him to think I’m scared.
I’m not scared of Andy. Disgusted, yes, but not scared.
So, I go with him. He insists that I ride with him, so after one awkwardly silent car ride, we arrive at a fancy restaurant. The
hostess leads us to a private room where the Princess is already waiting.
The person I don’t see as we walk in is Andy.
“Where is your husband?” Nolan asks as he hugs his daughter. Their movements are stiff, but I try to ignore them and not stare.
“He’s running late, but he’ll be here soon.”
They talk together quietly as we all sit down, letting the servers bring in plates of food we didn’t order. This place is much nicer
than anywhere I’ve ever eaten, and I feel out of place as the waiter offers me a cloth napkin.
I try to melt into the background as they talk, but she turns to me next, and I’m shocked by the bright blue of her eyes. She’s
gorgeous, like her mother, with long blonde hair. There were no pictures of Nolan and Chloe together on her social media, but as I
look at them now, I feel like they look more like siblings than father and daughter.
Is that odd? Probably.
I decide to keep the thought to myself, smiling politely as the Princess looks at me.
“I hear you’re my father’s secretary. How is your work going?” She asks kindly. The fact that she spoke to me already has me

surprised, but her asking about my work is a complete shock. I thought she would merely ignore me or be content to let me sit in
the background.
“Work is good. I’m learning the ropes and finding my way as anyone does in a new job,” I tell her truthfully, unsure of what else
to say.
Nolan glances at me then takes a bit of his food as Chloe continues, “Are you working on any research that would help the
company? I know my father expects nothing but excellence from his employees.”
I’m surprised at her interest in the company, so I tell her about the proposal I’ve been looking into. I explain the experiment and
give her information about the types of medications we’re looking at combining.
Every question she asks me is purposeful and intelligent, just like her father.
Just as I’m about to explain why heat is not a viable combination option, the room’s door opens.
Andy appears, looking satisfied and smug as he steps into the room.
