Chapter 18
“I’m fine on my own. You can stay with your friend,” I tell him, moving away from his touch. “I can get home on my own.”
Then, before either of them can protest, I book it out of there.
Nolan POV
I watch as Fiona walks away from me, but really, she practically runs away.
Carl hums and elbows me, “She’s a looker. Even you can’t keep your eyes off her, I see.”
A growl rumbles through my chest as I glare at him. Carl has never been one to keep his thoughts to himself, but he doesn’t have
to say it like that. Yes, she’s attractive, but the way he said it has something in me itching to inflict pain.
“I know you’re a private person, my friend, and never dabble in office romances even if they would be good to chip off some of
that icy exterior you hide behind.”
I glare at him again, narrowing my eyes at his words. If he knows what’s good for him, he won’t say anything else, but then
again, it’s Carl. He says whatever he wants with no thought about the consequences.
So, it’s no surprise that he doesn’t notice the glare I sent him and continues talking.
“She is gorgeous, and you shouldn’t keep such beautiful women to yourself, locked up in your office, Nolan. Why don’t you give me her contact information, so I can show little miss secretary what it’s like to have fun and not work all the time,” he says,
smiling at me. “I could even take her off your hands. I’ve been looking for a secretary for a while now.”
“No. The two of you would not be suitable together,” I growl, curling my fingers into my palms. “She is too young for you and has only just started at my company. She will not want to switch so quickly.”
Carl laughs and slaps my back. I cut my eyes to him, feeling agitated at his overly friendly gesture. He and I may have known each other for years, but for some reason, I can’t stand the sight of him at the moment.
“Nolan, you’re saying I’m too old, but I’m forty–five, which is only three years older than you,” he shoots back. The rising anger grows to a mountainous size, and I grit my teeth and dig my claws into my palms to keep from punching him.
Carl catches the action and his head ticks to the size as he looks me up and down.
“There’s something wrong here,” he says, pointing accusingly at me. “Is there something going on between you and your pretty little secretary? If so, don’t be so stubborn. Office romances aren’t against the law.”
“Be quiet,” I bark, spinning on him. I glance at the people around us, but none of them seem to be paying attention to us. “Keep your big mouth shut. There is nothing going on between me and Fiona.”
“Fine, fine. I’ll leave you to stew in your stubbornness.”
With a chuckle, he drags me back out to the bar, and before long, I let him know I have to leave. I’ve got work in the morning and

As I make my way out, a man in a maroon–colored suit catches my eye. I quickly realize it’s the man Fiona had been speaki
with before I interrupted earlier. They looked like they were flirting, being close enough to kiss, but now, the man is drinking
with an entirely different woman.
He laughs and touches the woman’s arm, and I scoff. If Fiona is interested in a man like this, she’s more naïve than I thought. He
seems like someone who would cheat on a naïve girl like her.
A nameless unease has taken hold of me.
