Chapter 11
I haven’t seen him in action, but the clear admiration tells me that Nolan is good at what he does.
As the meeting begins, I make sure to pay attention, typing out the information in short yet detailed notes. Several of the workers
around the table present information to Nolan, and with each person, he asks questions that are direct and detailed.
The advice he gives is also very short and to the point, but the way the employees nod and take their own notes on what he’s
saying tells me they value his words. I watch Nolan’s sharp green eyes as they focus on each of the people who talk. The glint of
intelligence and passion has me focusing more on him than his words.
My mind wanders to the conversation between the women in the pantry earlier and their gossip. Their words about Nolan being
sexually frigid come to mind… I was drunk the night we were together, but I still remember the heat. He made me feel so many
things that night that I’d never felt before.
Soon, I find myself looking at Nolan again, my eyes drifting from his chest to the top button of his shirt. He seems so different
now than he was that night. Now, he’s buttoned up and cold, but that night, Nolan was hot and free.
I can’t help but wonder if he ever lets that side out or if it was a mistake.
Something touches my hand, and I jolt out of my thoughts to find Nolan’s knuckles brushing against mine. I look up as his hand
pulls away. The narrow–eyed warning look brings me back to reality. I can practically hear King Nolan warning me to pay
attention and keep my mind on work.
Heat pools in my cheeks. I can’t believe I was staring at him in the middle of a meeting after I promised I wouldn’t cross the line.
I force myself to come back to my senses and continue to take notes, adding in a few extra pieces of information as the topics turn
to pharmaceutical experiments.
“Let me see the minutes,” Nolan says quietly. I turn the laptop in his direction, splitting my attention between Nolan and the
man who is presenting an experiment proposal.
“What is this?”
“What?” I ask, looking at Nolan. He points to the opinion notes I added in the margins of the minutes. “I used to study Pharmaceutical companies, patents, and I did research on new technologies and methods of testing the reactions between
different drugs.”
Nolan nods, his eyes moving back to the words on the screen.
“I’d like to hear Fiona’s thoughts on the proposal,” Nolan announces.
“What? You…” I don’t know what to say, but when he looks at me, I swallow the protest and look at the people across the table
from me. Nerves immediately jumble in my stomach, and I clutch my hands together under the table.
I haven’t done anything like this in years.

“Well, Mr. Parson’s proposal is good, but it’s not completely viable,” I say, glancing at Nolan. He nods, and I continue, “Mixing drugs together with heated vibrations runs the risks of creating volatile side effects or even the effect where the drug will become
degraded. Heated vibration is not a viable or sustainable method of combining pharmaceutical drugs.”
Mr. Parson glares at me, but he doesn’t have the guts to talk because Nolan taps the table with his finger. All eyes jump to the boss
as he speaks, “I agree. Until the proposal is modified with a more viable method that will not result in trouble for the company, it
will not be moving forward.”
“Based on the opinions of a small secretary?” Mr. Parson demands, slamming his fist down on the desk. I jump, not expecting the
anger or unprofessionalism while Nolan’s head jerks toward Mr. Parson.
“Are you questioning my decision?”
Everyone in the room seems to shrink at the demanding tone, their chins dropping to their chests. Something in me forces me to
do the same, basically bowing as the King stands to his full height. Out of the corner of my eye, I watch as Nolan crosses his arms
over his chest.
“This proposal is hereby rejected, and that is final.”
