Chapter 6
Hyron picked up the racing suit from the ground, his expression cold and resolte.
“Deal
The second he agreed, chaos erupted around him. A few of his buddies rushed over, voices laced with panic.
“Byron, are you serious? The guy’s been racing for years! You’ve never even touched a track–you can’t win this!”
“Yeah, you’re married now. There’s no reason to risk your life over Scarlett! What if something happens to you? What about Adele?”
But Byron didn’t hear a word. Or maybe he just didn’t care.
When one of them mentioned Adele’s name, he didn’t even flinch. His eyes were locked on Scarlett, standing a few steps away.
“I won’t lose. Whatever thrill she’s looking for–I can give it to her.”
His voice rang out, steady and loud.
Adele, standing at the edge of the crowd, felt her heart twist. Her fingers clenched into fists at her sides.
Some of Byron’s friends spotted her and rushed over, urging her to step in.
“Adele, talk to him. Please. You’re the only one who might get through to him.”
They practically pushed her toward the prep room.
As she stood outside the door, Adele’s chest tightened. Her stomach churned with dread.
She didn’t know anything about racing–but she knew Byron didn’t stand a chance. Going up against a professional driver like that? He might not make it out alive.
She had promised herself she’d let go. But standing here, watching him walk headfirst into something so reckless… she couldn’t just do nothing.
She took a shaky breath and raised her hand to push the door open-
And then Scarlett stepped out.
Her expression twisted into a smug, almost amused smile the moment she saw Adele.
“Here to beg him not to race?” she asked, voice dripping with mock sympathy. Don’t bother. Byron would never listen to you.”
She took a step closer, a slow, knowing smirk tugged at the corners of her lips.
“Do you even know how much he loves me? Back then, I said we should run away together, and without a second thought, he followed me onto a plane. When we caught back by our parents, he took the heat and never sold me out. In high school, every love letter to me by others,he ripped them up. He made some of them switch schools. He even got into a bloody fight for me–ended up in the hospital.
And you? You were just a fallback. A consolation prize! You really think one phone call from you is enough to make him walk away from me?”
Adele’s chest tightened. She stared at Scarlett, the weight of it all pressing down on her.
“If he means that much to you,” Adele said quietly, “and you know he’s going to lose–maybe even die–why aren’t you stopping him?!”
Scarlett let out a laugh, high and cruel, like Adele had asked something completely absurd.
“Why would I?” she said, smirking. “Isn’t it thrilling to watch a man throw away everything for you? His pride. His life. If I’ve chosen Byron, I want him to prove he’d die for me if it came to it. Don’t you think that’s romantic?”
She leaned in, her voice low and sharp.“But then again, you wouldn’t understand. Byron would never risk his life for you.”
Every word hit like a blow, each more vicious than the last. Adele felt her throat burn. She wanted to say something, anything–but the words refused
to come.
