someone else.
Upon hearing my words, George seemed to freeze on the spot. Like he had lost his soul, his eyes gradually dimmed.
“Mary, can we really not start over? Please give me one more chance! I promise to change. Do you remember our time at
university? All our shared-”
I mercilessly cut him off. “I already said it was too late. Nothing you say will change that, so please leave.”
His lips moved, but no sound came out.
Despite being told to get lost, he continued pushing against the door, stubbornly refusing to leave.
Seeing that, Dad finally grabbed a broom and came over. He already held a grudge against George for being absent during our engagement party, and he was also well aware of all the injustices I had suffered at George’s hands. Hence, he now seized the opportunity to vent his anger on George, whacking the latter with the broom.
“How dare you bully my precious daughter! Take this, you heartless bastard! Get lost! Scram!”
Nonetheless, George mulishly refused to go, his gaze locked onto me.
Even when he was bruised all over, he remained unmoving.
The commotion eventually drew a crowd as our neighbors watched the drama unfold.
“Isn’t that the Lithos family’s son–in–law?”
“Nah, he lost that title long ago. Luther, I’m guessing you didn’t see the trending news. Just now at the Emperor Hotel, that jerk
favored his sister over Mary and bullied her!”
“Mary is such a good woman. That brat didn’t know how lucky he was to have her.”
“Exactly! That’s why he’s regretting it now, but what’s the use?”

Even after Dad stopped, panting from the effort of hitting George with the broom, George refused to leave. Left without a choice, I
called the security guards.
In no time at all, four muscular men came over and forcefully dragged him away.
One of our neighbors eventually told me that she saw George jump into the swimming pool to search for the ring.
It was late autumn, so the weather was quite chilly, yet he remained in the water for close to four hours.
However, this had nothing to do with me anymore.
Finally, it was my wedding day. I was in another room getting my makeup done when I received news that George had come to snatch the bride.
According to the makeup artist, George was dressed in a black suit with a bouquet of jasmines and had been about to charge into the hall.
However, he never even got close to the doors before the hotel’s security guards stopped him.
At that moment, Jonah came over. Staring at my reflection in the mirror, he said from the bottom of his heart, “Mary, you’re utterly gorgeous. Don’t worry, everything will go smoothly today. I won’t let any clowns ruin our perfect day.”
My lips curled up into a dazzling smile, and it only widened when he bent to kiss the top of my veil.
On that day, with the blessings of my family and friends, I stepped into a new chapter of my life.
As I stood in the middle of the venue, gazing at the pure white jasmines and floating balloons decorating the place, I thought it was all a dream. Yet, the man before me told me otherwise.
“Mary, you deserve this. You deserve the best.”
The moment he put the ring on my finger, I couldn’t help but cry despite my best efforts not to.
Mom, I had done as I promised.
I was happy.
