CHAPTER 6.
Before I knew it, I’d been here for a few days. My arrival was barely a secret anymore. I could tell everyone was curious to see the ‘rejected one‘ after years. But despite what they were saying, I wasn’t about to let that make me hide away.
“Ready to go, Rowan?” I called.
Rowan came running over, clutching his little backpack. “Are we going to see the wolves again, Mom?”
I paused. I still didn’t tell him what we truly were. He didn’t know that those wolves around the pack were actually our kind in their other form. I’ll tell him. Just not now.
“Not really,” I ruffled his dark hair. “We’re just taking a walk. Stay close to me, okay?”
“Okay!”
held his hand and opened the door. We walked around the edge of the pack territory, but I could still hear the whispers all around.
“She’s back?”
“After all this time?”
thought she died…”
Anyone who passed by would throw us a double glance before walking away. I tried to ignore their stares. But they continued their whispers. Even Rowan noticed it. “Mom?” he tugged on my hand. “Why are they staring?”
“They’re just curious,” I said lightly, pinching his cheeks lightly. “After all, you’re a handsome little boy.”
He giggled and didn’t bother about the random talk anymore.
Soon, we reached a corner where a bunch of younger wolves, both in wolf and human form were training.
paused, I don’t remember this being here. But after all, I’d been gone for five years. It was normal for there to be new things around that I wasn’t aware of.
They also stared at us curiously.
Mira? Is that really her?”
“She brought a child? Whose is it?”
She has no shame.”
kept my chin high, even if I hated the sound of their whispers.

“Mom, why don’t they like us?” Rowan asked quietly.
They don’t know us,” I replied, my voice steady. “And sometimes people act like this with people they don’t know.”
He frowned but didn’t say anything else.
We
were almost through the training area when a group of the young wolves blocked our path. Their leader, a tall, thin guy with a cocky grin, stepped closer.
“Well, look who it is,” he sneered. “The runaway mate. We thought you’d be too embarrassed to show your face here again. But you’re even more shameless than we thought.” The others laughed, their eyes shining with amusement.
didn’t stop walking. “Get out of my way.”
“Or what?” he mocked, stepping closer. “You’ll run away again? Oh, wait–you already did that.”
clenched my fist, suppressing my anger. There was no need to bother with these ignorant people.
He wasn’t pleased that I didn’t answer. So, he continued. “What? You can’t talk anymore? How about I tell your little son here about his mother’s-”
I didn’t let him finish. My glare was sharp enough to make him silent. “Don’t push me,” I warned.
didn’t want any trouble after returning. But if they pushed me, I wouldn’t mind making a move.
Hey, I’m just joking.” he said with a nervous laugh when he noticed how serious I was. His friends were already walking away from him.
brushed past him, pulling Rowan along.
“Wow… you’re so strong, Mom.” Rowan said in wonder as he looked up at me with sparkling eyes.
flaughed, amused. “Thanks, kiddo.”
My son was the reason I endured all these things. Just seeing him happy meant more than any challenge.
We turned a corner, deciding to head back to Miras cabin when I saw someone familiar.
Selena.
She stood in the way, her chin raised as she eyed me and Rowan with a smirk curled on her lips. “Well, well,” she said with a chuckle. “Look who decided to crawl back.”
