Chapter 5
“Kevin, you promised my parents you’d take care of me. Are you just going to watch her bully me? If you hadn’t arrived so quickly, I would’ve died today.” Lily looked at Kevin with a wounded expression.
Everyone else stared at me with disapproving looks.
“You have a point,” Kevin glanced at Lily and nodded.
Seeing his reaction, I felt disappointed and was about to lose my temper when he firmly gripped my hand, making it impossible for me to break free.
He said, “Let’s have the investigators look into this. Based on the evidence at the scene, they should reach a conclusion quickly. I absolutely won’t cover for Audrey, but if she’s being falsely accused, I won’t stand by and do nothing.”
The onlookers nodded in agreement. Someone immediately went to call the investigators.
Lily trembled in the center of the crowd. The neighbors, thinking she was cold, took off their jackets and draped them over her shoulders.
I lowered my head, thinking to myself, “Why aren’t they here yet? If the investigator says I did it, I can divorce this man and go home to eat my mom’s barbecue. I don’t want to be here. I

don’t want to be married to Kevin.”

Kevin whispered in my car, “Darling, I believe in you! Just hang in there a little longer. Once the investigators prove your innocence, we’ll go home. You can punish me however you want.”
I was stunned and looked up at Kevin. His expression was remorseful.
The investigators arrived quickly, but things didn’t unfold as I’d expected. They were fair. After they determined that Lily had jumped down herself, the neighbors awkwardly came over to apologize to me.
Seeing Lily sitting silently on the ground, some even tried to explain on her behalf, asking me to be more understanding.
Kevin said, “Why should Audrey have any obligation to tolerate Lily? Audrey came all the way to this island, only to be framed. That’s not fair. Lily, your parents were heroes, and you should be an upright person too. I won’t look after you anymore. You’re on your own now!”
Ignoring everyone’s reactions and Lily’s angry protests, Kevin took my hand and led me away.
Back home, Kevin brought me freshly made soup and carefully sat down beside me.

He said, “Darling, last Christmas when we were on a mission, it was Lily’s father, Mark, who covered our retreat. He sacrificed himself for us. That’s why every Christmas we’ve been more tolerant of Lily, as she’s Mark’s only child. I never expected her to go this far.”
Kevin sighed. The man who had been so firm earlier now seemed somewhat lost.
I said, “Let me tell you, I won’t put up with this stuff anymore, and I don’t care if she’s indebted to you or not. If you dare get entangled with other women, I’ll break your legs.”
Seeing my anger, Kevin laughed and held my fists.
He said, “Alright, I promise. Let’s not discuss this anymore. Let’s get some rest.”
As he spoke, he wrapped his arms around my waist.
Soon, my consciousness gradually blurred, and I drifted off.
