He took a breath.]
“I’m sorry. We’ll cover the medical expenses.” []
The head nurse’s tone softened slightly.
“Lily, what do you think?” []
Sarah glared at Emma, gritting her teeth.
“I want her to pay my bills. And I want an apology.”
Marcus nodded.]
That didn’t seem unreasonable.
“I will never apologize to her!”
Emma clenched the blanket in her fists, her eyes burning with fury. []
“Why should I apologize? I didn’t do anything wrong!” ]]
Then she looked at Marcus, her voice suddenly soft and pitiful. []
“Marcus, please… I don’t want to apologize.”
Marcus frowned.
For the first time, he felt like she was just being unreasonable.
“Emma, come on. Just say sorry.” I
Tears welled up in her eyes. []
“Marcus, you’ve changed. You didn’t used to be like this.” []
His frown deepened. []
What did she mean–used to be like what?
When he didn’t answer, Emma bit her lip and tried her usual act.
“Fine. I get it.”
“If you all want me dead, I’ll die.“]
“Will that make you happy?”
She jumped out of bed and ran toward the window.
Marcus’s eyes widened in shock.
He lunged forward and grabbed her in time.
“Emma, stop! Calm down, okay?“[]
“No one’s going to force you.”
“You don’t have to apologize.“[

While he was busy calming her down, the head nurse snorted. []
She’d worked in hospitals for almost a decade.]]
She’d seen it all.
“You better check yourself, miss.” []
“No one said anything about you dying.” []

Emma’s sorrow twisted into something darker. []
Around her, the others looked at her with disbelief and scorn. []
Marcus hadn’t noticed. []
But when he turned and saw the room’s atmosphere, his face turned cold.
“What the hell is wrong with all of you?” []
“Aren’t you medical professionals? Where’s your compassion?”
The head nurse rolled her eyes.
“Oh, I’m sorry–so assaulting a nurse is your idea of compassion?” []
“Cut the crap. Apologize and let’s move on.“[]
We’re not running a daycare here.” []
The others chimed in.
“Yeah, just apologize.“[
“If you don’t, we’re calling the cops.” [
“Unbelievable, people like you…“[]
Emma couldn’t stand it anymore. []
Furious, she marched straight up to the head nurse.

“What’s that on your ankle?”
Emma froze.
His gaze was locked on the thin chain peeking out from under her hospital gown. []
