Marcus finally snapped out of his daze and yelled just as Emma hurled a book straight at the nurse.
The nurse dodged, eyes wide with fury.
“What the hell is wrong with you people?”
“This is a hospital, not your personal drama stage!”
Emma’s chest heaved with rage.
Her voice cracked, on the edge of hysteria.]]
“She insulted me!“]]
“She called me… a slut!”
Marcus ran a hand down his face.
His voice was tight, low.
“Emma, calm down.“]]
“Just… take a deep breath, okay?“]
But Emma wasn’t listening.
She was sobbing now, hands trembling as she pointed at the nurse.
“She had no right–no damn right to say that to me!“]
The nurse, arms crossed, glared right back.
“I had every right.“]
“Your friend here let his wife go through a miscarriage alone.”
“While you two were playing house in a hospital room meant for the woman who actually needed him.”
She stepped closer, her voice colder than ice.]
“If that were me?”
“I’d rather go through hell alone than have someone like him by my side.”
Emma turned her face away, tears streaming down.]]
Marcus’s expression twisted with something between guilt and fury.[]
But this time, he didn’t defend himself.]
He didn’t defend Emma either.]]
He just stood there, speechless.[]
Like a man who’d finally realized the mess he’d made.]
The nurse looked him over one last time, then scoffed.]
“Piece of advice?“]
“Don’t show up for your wife’s funeral one day pretending you gave a damn.“]
And with that, she stormed out of the room, the door slamming behind her.]
The silence that followed was deafening.

Emma clutched the bedsheet, her nails digging into the fabric.
Marcus didn’t move.

The tiny silver cross with angel wings.
The one he had promised to Olivia.]]
The one now tied around Emma’s ankle like some sick joke.[]
His jaw clenched.
He untied it without a word.[]
Emma tried to stop him, grabbing his wrist.
“Wait, Marcus, please

He didn’t look back.

The corner of the book scraped the nurse’s face, leaving a long, bleeding cut near her eye. []
“Ahhh!”
The nurse touched the blood and screamed, stumbling back as she pushed open the door. []
“Somebody help! Someone’s causing trouble in here!”
Several nearby doctors and nurses rushed in. 0
When they saw the blood trickling down the young nurse’s cheek, they gasped. [
The cut wasn’t deep, but it had come dangerously close to her eye.
Just a fraction closer, and she could’ve lost her sight. [
“Lily, what happened?” []
The head nurse carefully dabbed at the wound with a disinfectant pad, her voice full of concern. []

Now with a scar on her face–God forbid it stayed–it could impact her whole future. [
Sarah knew that too.
Eyes red, she quickly turned to the head nurse.
“She threw something at me.”
She pointed at Emma, looking completely aggrieved. []
The head nurse’s expression turned cold.
“Ma’am, do you have anything to say for yourself?”
“This is a civilized country.“[]
“You can’t just go around hurting people and expect no consequences.” [
Emma had finally cooled off a bit. []
But hearing those words, a flicker of panic flashed through her eyes. []
She instinctively turned to Marcus, hoping he’d defend her.
Catching her look, Marcus started to speak on impulse.
“Emma didn’t mean it… she’s been dealing with depression…“[]
“Oh, so that makes it okay to hurt people?” []
“Being mentally ill means there are no consequences?” []
The head nurse cut him off sharply. []
“Intent doesn’t change the fact.”
You hurt someone. Lily deserves an explanation.” []
Marcus froze.
She was right.
