recovering from a miscarriage I’d have never called.”

“It’s okay,” I reassure her, letting her know that I already had some suspicions about Michael. “It’s not the worst thing I’ve heard
today.”
I then tell her about the doctor’s words, about how I’ll never have another child again, or that if I do become pregnant, my body won’t be able to sustain the pregnancy without a lot of assistance. “Because of the beating I took, future pregnancies could be fatal, not just for the child, but for me and…” I’m unable to say anymore as I take a deep breath to keep from sobbing again.
“Please don’t tell Michael. I want to tell him myself, in person.”
“Of course, Addy,” Tracy’s soft voice is soothing and quiet, “I won’t say a thing.” Hey, you know what,” Tracy’s voice takes on a sudden cheerfulness, “I get off in 15 minutes. How about I stop at the old pizza place we used to love, you know the one down the street from the apartment? It’s on my way to the hospital. I can be there in 30 minutes and we can hang out, maybe watch a
movie, It’ll be like old times.”
Wiping my eyes with the back of my hand, I agree that it would be great if she stopped by. “Only if you have the time, I…”
“I’ll make the time,” Tracy declares. “You shouldn’t be there alone. You’re that important.”
As we hang up, her words ring through my mind.
I shouldn’t be alone. I’m important.
And yet my husband, even if his visit to the clinic with Evelyn is completely innocent, was more important to him than visiting
- me. He hasn’t been by even once.
None of them have.
What kind of family forgets about you for three days?
“One that doesn’t love you anymore,” I’m no longer sad as I pick up my laptop from a nearby table. The office had brought it by yesterday, the assumption being that I could work from bed. It figures the only thing Michael WOULD send is something that
benefits him.
Flipping through my files, it was easy for me to find the divorce paper template that I’ve used for similar families. In less than 20 minutes I have a custom divorce agreement that leaves me with nothing but what I came into the marriage with—my family money and the little bit I’ve saved from working for the firm. He can keep everything else—the business, the house, our son.
I won’t fight him. If he doesn’t want me anymore, I’ll let him go.
My phone beeps. Seeing that it’s Michael I press the button to accept his call. Now is as good a time as any to tell him my feelings.
“Michael. we need to talk,” I begin, but he cuts me off rudely.
“I can’t believe you, Addison!” He shouts loud enough for me to pull the phone from my ear. “How could you be so evil?”
“I don’t understand,” I stare at the phone, perplexed. I had been prepared to ask Michael about his visit to the fertility clinic and
about everything else that has come up, but instead, I find myself going into defensive mode. “What have I done that is…”
