During Caleb’s time abroad, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
That day, I was eerily calm. For a man who was always in control, that kind of composure unsettled him.
He had called me over a dozen times, but I never picked up. His unease worsened. Eventually, he couldn’t take it anymore—he
had to come back and check on me.
“Caleb, please don’t go. How am I supposed to live alone in a foreign country? I’m scared…” 1
Tears streaked down Yvette’s face as she clung to him. Her eyes, filled with pain and accusation, made his chest tighten.
His heart ached, and he pulled her into his arms to stroke her back. His voice softened. “I’m just going to check on Natalie. I’ll
come right back to be with you, I promise.”
But Yvette only sobbed harder. “Natalie has the housekeeper and Mrs. Lawson caring for her. She’ll be fine. But I only have you, Caleb. What am I supposed to do if you leave?”
Her baby bump had gotten bigger, making it harder for her to walk or sleep.
Her words hit Caleb, and guilt gnawed at him. Pregnancy was already difficult enough, and Yvette was vulnerable and emotional.
How could he even think about leaving her alone in an unfamiliar place? What the hell was he thinking?
“Besides, Natalie should be doing just fine,” he thought. He had made all the necessary arrangements before he had left.
