Every night, he’d stay up with me, rubbing my legs and staring at my belly with a worried look that kept him awake.
I reached up to smooth the frown between his brows and teased, “Jeremiah, you’ve got classic prepartum anxiety. How about I’ll
take you to see a doctor tomorrow?”
His hand gently rested on my belly. “Audrey, I’m scared. Nothing can go wrong with this child.”
I laid my hand over his. “It won’t. Everything’s going to be fine this time.”
Eventually, I gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Only then did the deep ache in our hearts finally ease.
We celebrated our baby’s first birthday at Beverton City’s most luxurious hotel.
Jeremiah and I had just stepped out of the car with our baby when a ragged, limping man charged toward us. Our bodyguards
blocked him before he could come any closer to us.
At first, I thought he was just a beggar. It was a happy occasion, so I was about to tell them to send him off with some food and
supplies.
However, I recognized him when he spoke. It was Ethan.
“Uncle Jeremiah, Aunt Audrey, you have a child again now. Please, let me come back to the Moore family. I know I was wrong.
Please, let me come home…”
After we crippled him and Hazel, neither of them got proper treatment. Thus, they were left with permanent disabilities. Over the
years, life had beaten Ethan down until he was barely more than a beggar.
Many nights, he regretted believing Hazel and running away from that wedding.
Hazel had abandoned him years ago, marrying a man in his 50s and vanishing from his life.
Between his injuries and the hellish life he now lived, Ethan had thought about ending it all more times than he could count.
The only thing keeping him alive was the thought that maybe if Jeremiah and I had another child, we’d finally forgive him and let
him return.

And now, he’d waited long enough to see this day.
Jeremiah looked at him and said coldly, “Leaving you alive was already a mercy. You want to come back to the Moore family?
Keep dreaming.”
He then ordered the bodyguards to drag Ethan away.
His action crushed Ethan’s last hope. He went back to his rental unit and committed suicide that same night.
Jeremiah and I were playing with the baby when we got the news.
When Jeremiah heard the news, he remained quiet for a long moment. Then, he ordered someone to collect Ethan’s ashes.
