When Eugene reached the frozen waters, he found a crowd of werewolves surrounding a hole in the ice.
Everyone was sighing.
“It’s hopeless. She fell right in. There’s not even a trace of her left.”
“Such a shame. She’s fish food now.”
Eugene grabbed someone by the collar. “Why hasn’t anyone gone in after her? Dive in! I’ll pay whatever it takes to bring her back!”
The werewolf tasked with the search was terrified as he stammered, “B–But Alpha, the water’s too deep, and it’s freezing! No one’s willing to risk their life for any amount of money.

“Also, it’s dark now. We can’t see a thing. There’s no way to recover a body. She was just unlucky.”
Eugene lost all strength and collapsed onto the ice.
He stared blankly into the dark hole before crawling to the edge and shouting, “Selena! Where are you?”
He refused to believe I had drowned. He threw heaps of gold and jewels into the hands of the searchers.
“Please just bring her back to me. You can have anything you want… Just bring my mate back.”
Tempted by the riches, a few brave werewolves dove into the icy water.
Still, they came back empty–handed.

Eugene couldn’t wait any longer. He leapt into the frozen ocean himself, diving and searching through the freezing water until the middle of the night.
Finally, someone hauled him out.
In his hand was a shawl.
He murmured, “This… Selena was wearing this today…
His eyes were reddened as tears came involuntarily. He couldn’t bear the reality.
He clutched the shawl to his chest, crying and whispering on the ice, “Selena, come back… I’m sorry. I’ll spend your birthday with
you. We’ll have pups and live a happy life like we always planned. You promised me…”
But it was too late.
Anything he said was futile. He hadn’t done all that while I was still around.
Now, he would never have the chance to do them.
By the time Eugene returned home, the sun had risen.
Kristy rushed to him the moment he walked in. “Eugene, you’re finally back! How could you just leave the wedding like that? Do
you know what everyone is saying about me?”
Eugene seemed deaf to her voice. He walked past her in a daze and sat down in front of the vanity–my vanity. He ran his hand slowly over the tabletop. The jewelry box on it was still open.
Inside were all the gifts he had given me over the years we’d been together. I had left them all behind.
After suddenly remembering something, he rushed out and headed for the small house I’d recently moved into.
The room was so shockingly bare that it looked like a beggar’s quarters. There was nothing inside.

Eugene froze. “This was Selena’s new place? Why is there nothing here?”
A trembling Jacey replied, “Kristy said… since she’s pregnant, her expenses have gone up. So, the budget for Selena’s place had to be cut. Kristy said the place only needed a basic setup.
“She also forbade Selena from eating meat. She was fed only vegetables and legumes. Kristy said that since Selena wasn’t pregnant, she didn’t need the extra nutrients.”
Eugene thought back to Kristy’s lavish meals, then to the jewelry and clothes she wore. They were all things he had once bought for me.
And I had left them all behind without a word.
On the bed lay a silver chain, broken in half. It was the token we’d made together on the day he confessed his love to me.
Back then, Eugene had smiled at me and said, “May our love be as eternal as the stars–never to be broken.”
Now, the chain lay shattered, its pieces scattered across the bed… just like the vows we once made.
