“Glenna!”
It had literally been a lifetime apart. Upon seeing Glenna Trevino again, Lizzie was overwhelmed by mixed feelings, and her voice trembled.
In her past life, the Howland family had picked on her for being an orphan, until her aunt Glenna brought her cousin Colton Trevino over multiple times, standing up for her.
But back then, because of her love for Theron, she had stubbornly refused to leave and believed everything would be better.
She had done a lot of things that failed Glenna and Colton.
They had advised her to leave, but she couldn’t bear to, figuring that Theron was nice to her when Johanna wasn’t around.
Seeing that she wouldn’t change her mind no matter what, they worried that pushing further might only annoy her, so they gradually stopped saying anything, only helping her when she was going through the toughest times.
Lizzie’s eyes
welled up with tears as she recalled how nice Glenna was to her.
Glenna strode toward Lizzie. At the sight of the pale–faced Lizzie in a wheelchair, she bit her lip, her eyes reddening.
“The nurse didn’t tell me it was this bad. You’re in a wheelchair?” She rubbed Lizzie’s bony hands with great force, her eyes brimming with tears.
Lizzie could see gray hair on Glenna’s temples, but Glenna was still sturdy.
She had warm, strong hands.
Ever since Lizzie’s parents‘ death, she and her husband Emery Trevino had been taking care of Lizzie and her brother Aedan Trevino like they were her own flesh and blood.
Sensible as always, Lizzie and Aedan had never told Emery and his family any bad news, not wanting them to worry.
But this had resulted in distancing them further.
She didn’t want this to happen again!
“Lizzie, how come you were in a car accident?” Glenna wiped her tears away, her heart aching. She crouched down, stroking the cast on Lizzie’s leg gently, “It must hurt so much, right? Why didn’t you tell us?”
Glenna’s eyes with concern warmed Lizzie. She said, “It’s just a bone fracture. I’m fine.”
“Fine? How could you possibly be fine? You’re in a wheelchair!” Glenna said in a sobbing voice. “You silly girl.

Why do you have to be so stubborn? You always keep everything to yourself. Where’s Theron? Why isn’t he with you?”
“We broke up,” Lizzie said calmly.
Glenna was stunned. “What? What happened? How come you broke up all of a sudden? Did he upset you?”
“No. It’s just we aren’t cut out for each other.”
“Stop defending him!” Glenna was so anxious that she stomped her foot, figuring that Lizzie, who still loved Theron, was covering up for him after he had bullied her.
Not wanting Glenna to worry, Lizzie said truthfully, “He said he owed someone a huge debt and insisted I should help repay it as his fiancée. He even wanted to sacrifice my job. I didn’t want to, so I proposed a breakup.”
Now that she had told Glenna the truth, Glenna wouldn’t overthink it or persuade her to get back together with Theron because of his one–sided story.
After all, she had come to Equinox Research Laboratory all because of Theron, and Glenna knew very well how much she had loved him.
Glenna’s face flamed red. “I thought Theron was a decent guy–he was so protective of you. How could he do this?
“And what’s all this about sacrificing your job? So, you don’t have a job now?” She became anxious. “What are you
gonna
do now? You’re unemployed and injured! Will they ask you to go work in a small town in the countryside?”
Tears rolled down her cheeks from anxiety. She pondered for a while before gritting her teeth, saying, “Lizzie, don’t worry. You can have my job. Go and work at the textile mill. At least it’s a job, right? I can’t bear to see you all alone without any income.”
Lizzie was stunned. “What are you talking about, Glenna? How can I have your job?”
“Why can’t you? You’re my niece. Of course, I’ll always help you when you need it,” Glenna said. “I’m sure Emery will be OK with this.”
Though Lizzie was deeply touched, she wouldn’t accept it. “If you give me your job, what about Colton? He’s gonna graduate from junior high school next year. Where will he work?”
Glenna gritted her teeth. “Emery and I expect him to be an upright man. If he has to go and work in the countryside, that’s fine. It’ll toughen him up. If Katherine can go there, so can he.”
Colton would be just fifteen after graduating from junior high, and he was still practically a child. As his mother,
- Glenna couldn’t bear to see him suffer at all.
Katherine Trevino was her daughter, Back then, Katherine had volunteered to go to the countryside, leaving the job for Colton, her younger brother.
Lizzie was deeply moved, feeling a lump in her throat.
She shook her head violently. “If you really give me your job, I’ll be living with guilt every day from now on. Be- sides, I have a plan. I’ll get my job back.”

Glenna figured she was just saying this to reassure her and was even more worried. She sighed in frustration, “Could you stop being stubborn for once? You’re unemployed now because of Theron! What could you possibly do?”
“I’m not lying, Glenna. Trust me—I have a way,” Lizzie said. “Who knows? Maybe I’ll go to another lab.”
“Another lab? Could you pull that off?” Glenna was skeptical.
Lizzie said firmly, “You know there are a lot of top universities in the Northwest, right? I wanna study there. Besides, it’s got a lot of oil fields and fertile land over there, all waiting to be developed. There will be ample opportunities.”
“But it’s so cold in the Northwest. You’ll still suffer!” Glenna shook her head, recalling the tearful face of her neigh- bor while recounting her children’s experience in the Northwest.
“No. That won’t do. You’re alone, and you don’t know anyone there. What if something happens? No! I won’t accept it.”
“Glenna, there’s a chance that I might get my job back. Don’t you think I should fight for it?? Lizzie persuaded.
Glenna’s eyes lit up. “Really? Alright then. I’m all for it. Hopefully, you can get your job back, and then you won’t have to go anywhere.
“Come home with me now. I’ll take care of you when you’re recovering. Anything else can wait after your wound is healed. Colton must be thrilled once he knows you’re gonna stay with us!” Glenna said while pushing the wheelchair carefully, not wanting the bumpy road to worsen Lizzie’s wound.
As she mentioned Colton, she finally smiled, “Colton will be so thrilled upon seeing you!”
Theron rushed back to the dorm of Equinox Research Laboratory and took Johanna to the hospital.
She supported her waist, her pale face drenched in sweat.
The doctor gave her a thorough check–up and confirmed it was just a scrape, and the baby was fine. Only then did Theron breathe a sigh of relief.
He then took Johanna back to the dorm and settled her down.
Hearing the sounds, Adrienne walked out of her dorm, visibly worried.
“Hanna, are you OK?” She helped Johanna inside.
It wouldn’t be appropriate for Theron to go inside, so he let go.
“Mr. Howland, why don’t you come in? You’re practically Hanna’s family, right?” Adrienne winked meaningfully.
