Chapter 6
“Emily, what are you doing! Didn’t you see me standing right at the door!”
“You uncultured bitch. What does Kevin see in you that he’s willing to put up two thousand dollars for wedding funding?” Madison cursed at me viciously.
I finally got a clear look at Madison.
After several months, even though she was wearing long sleeves and pants, I could tell she was skin and bones.
The excessive weight loss had stripped away her former charm, making her look mean–spirited instead.
“Haven’t seen you in months, and you’ve forgotten basic manners? Help me up!”
I ignored Madison and poured myself a glass of water.
I wasn’t surprised she could find this place. After all, in my previous life, she had wanted a divorce the day after the wedding because she thought Kevin’s home was too shabby.
When I didn’t help her up, Madison wasn’t bothered. She stood up on her own and looked around the apartment Kevin and I had cleaned with disgust.

After all this time of care, the apartment was no longer the dusty mess it had been initially. Instead, it radiated the warmth of a lived–in home.
“What a country bumpkin who’s never seen the world. Kevin fooled you with a rented apartment.”
Then Madison picked up the SAT practice test I had just finished from the table and mocked me.
“Emily, you actually want to go to college. You’re so stupid, don’t waste the exam fee. I’d advise you to give up carly. Poor people like you are destined to be my stepping stones.”
Madison smugly rolled up her sleeve, showing off the bracelet on her wrist.
“This is from Victor. You could never afford something this expensive in your lifetime.”
I remained calm and refused to engage with her.
Madison was clearly unsatisfied with my calm reaction, but she controlled her anger.
She said, “For the sake of our sisterly bond over the years, I’ll give you an opportunity. Victor has an investment project that needs funding. If you invest just a thousand dollars, I guarantee a ten–fold return. How about it? I’m being pretty good to you,
aren’t I?”

Hearing Madison’s words that were identical to my previous life, I smiled and said, “I don’t think you’re being good to me at all.”
Madison’s fake smile froze, then turned into an angry expression. “Emily!”
Before she could lose her temper, I spoke first: “How does it feel to get beaten unconscious every day? I think your family’s going bankrupt. Am I right?”
Right after I finished speaking, Madison’s stomach cooperatively growled with hunger.
Victor had no business sense at all. Madison’s talk of investing a thousand dollars for a ten–fold return was nothing but a scam. Such good fortune would never fall to ordinary people like us. The bracelet Victor bought her was also a fake, yet Madison believed his every word.
I was sure she had realized something was wrong, but she didn’t want to believe her efforts had been in vain.
Seeing me ruthlessly expose Madison’s lies, she flew into a rage and tried to lunge at me.
I gripped her wrist tightly, making it impossible for her to move.
Madison was so frail now that she couldn’t possibly break free from my grip, especially since she’d been pampered all her life

and never done any real work.
Realizing she couldn’t hurt me at all, Madison angrily pulled her hand back and said viciously, “Bitch, you’re talking nonsense! Victor just drinks too much when he’s entertaining clients!”
