Chapter 15 Start to Learn Latin
Theron frowned. Lizzie loved him so much. How could she just not come back over something so small?
But then he thought of how resolute Lizzie had been over the past two days, and his brow furrowed deeper.
He had a fire smoldering in his chest.
He had explained everything to her. He was going to marry her and take care of her for life. Why didn’t she under- stand?
Did she really expect him to turn his back on Johanna?
The more Theron thought about it, the more frustrated he became.

He unfastened his collar button, rolled up his sleeves, and picked up the basin to fetch water and wash up.
Tomorrow, he would try talking to Lizzie again. If that didn’t work, he’d borrow 200 dollars from Zaire and give her the engagement gift first. That should reassure her and stop her from acting up.
Just as he stepped out, the instructor rushed in.
“Theron! Emergency assembly! The field training has been moved up!”
Theron was surprised, but as a researcher, he knew orders came before anything else.
He immediately straightened and saluted. “Sir! Theron Howland of Regiment 115, understood!”
The instructor quickly went off to notify the others.
Theron lowered his hand. That meant he wouldn’t have time to see Lizzie tomorrow.
Maybe it was just as well. This would give her time to cool off.
Once he came back from training, her anger would have subsided, and she’d come around.
She loved him that much. She wouldn’t leave him.
All those things she’d said were just in the heat of the moment. Once he returned, he’d patch things up with her.
To be a military spouse, she’d need to learn what she should and shouldn’t do.
Theron turned back into the dorm and packed his field gear.
He put the army rucksack on his back and set off with the team.
Lizzie was translating a journal article while Colton sat nearby doing his homework.

He watched Lizzie write nonstop on the page. Fredrick had said a Latin dictionary was a must, but his cousin hadn’t used it a single time.
In less than an hour, she had nearly finished translating the entire piece.
Colton’s eyes sparkled.
Lizzie looked up. “Do you want to learn?”
His eyes lit up, and Colton nodded vigorously!
He would never again say studying was a waste of time. If he had her skills, the family could earn another income. His parents wouldn’t have to work so hard, and they could give his sister more help.
That evening, he diligently laid out both his and Lizzie’s beddings, then helped her to the bed.
Lizzie slept in Katherine’s bed, with a curtain drawn between her and Colton.
As Colton climbed under the covers, a thought occurred to him. He poked his head through the curtain.
“Lizzie, is it too late for me to start learning now?”
She replied, “As you saw today, there’s a shortage of skilled people right now. It never hurts to have more skills. The more you know, the more choices you have.”
“True!” Colton flipped onto his back.
fter a brief moment, he poked his head through the curtain again.
izzie, do you think Katherine could join too?”
Lizzie’s heart trembled slightly, but she suppressed her emotions and answered firmly, “Of course she can. Anyone who’s been to high school can do it. Katherine has got what it takes.”
Only Lizzie knew that next spring, Katherine would be forced to marry a man who assaulted her and end up stuck in the countryside.
But Lizzie wouldn’t tell Colton that now. By then, her leg would be healed, and she’d figure something out.
“I’ll prepare some study materials and send them to Katherine in the village soon. She’s so smart. If you want to get into the same university as her, you’d better work hard.”
Colton was full of hope as if he could already see a future where his sister, cousin, and he all got into college in the city for a better life.
“I know! Lizzie, I’m going to study hard too!”
Lizzie smiled, “Close your eyes. I’ll read you a Latin lyric to train your ear.”
Colton obediently shut his eyes, ears perking up.
In the quiet room, Lizzie’s soft voice flowed gently.
