Chapter 12 She Earns More Than His Dad
In her previous life, he had been one of the few people who were still nice to her even after learning about the stain on her record.
In this life, she would not allow that stain to exist. She would rise up and participate in the major national research projects.
“Ms. Trevino, although I fully recognize your ability, you still have to start from the primary level. Once you’ve trans- lated 50,000 words, I’ll submit a request to promote you: The current rate for primary translation is 0.5 dollars per thousand words. A typical journal article is about 3,000 words, and the translation fee would be 1.5 dollars. How does that sound to you?”
Lizzie wasn’t really listening. She already knew the pay scale.
But Colton’s eyes lit up with joy!
Translating one article would earn 1.5 dollars. According to Fredrick, most people could only manage one article a day, but at Lizzie’s speed, she could handle two or three.
That would mean about 4 dollars per day, over 120 dollars a month!
Colton’s father was an accountant at the factory, considered an advanced worker, but even he only made 85 dollars a month!
He knew it! Lizzie was the best!
Colton was so proud of his cousin.
Knowledge truly was power!
Colton didn’t know how good Lizzie’s Latin was, or how much work it took to learn it, but at that moment, his entire view of studying changed. He no longer thought studying was a waste of time!
Lizzie nodded.
- Fredrick immediately offered the job.
“Great! I’m in.”
Lizzie agreed without hesitation. She had come to him specifically to take on translation work.
“Wonderful! Ms. Trevino, welcome to national service!”
Fredrick beamed with joy, shaking Lizzie’s hand with excitement.

Lady Luck must have paid a visit. He had just received an order to find translators for a batch of important journals, and a talent like Lizzie walked right in!
Fredrick quickly pulled out the registration log and began filling in Lizzie’s details.
Glancing at her leg, he asked, “Ms. Trevino, is your leg okay? You can work from home if you want to. Just leave a deposit for the journal.”
In her previous life, Lizzie had taken documents home to translate so she could look after Darrell.
“I’ll take it home to translate.”
Colton immediately raised his hand and volunteered loudly, “I can be the errand boy. I’ll deliver and pick up materials and finished translations!”
The boy stood tall with a proud chest, so eager and earnest that both Lizzie and Fredrick burst out laughing.
“Without you, she might not be able to do this job.”
Colton scratched his head and gave a silly smile, “That’s the least I could do!”
Lizzie looked at him, a warm feeling welling up in her chest.

In her previous life, she had distanced herself from her own family for Theron. How foolish that was!
Lizzie pulled out a bundle of money wrapped in a handkerchief from her pocket.
The handkerchief was faded from washing but still clean.
She unwrapped it, took out 5 dollars, and handed it to Fredrick.
“This is the deposit.”
Fredrick was stupefied.
How did she know the deposit was 5 dollars?
Lizzie froze, too. She trusted Fredrick, so she had let her guard down and given him the money without asking.
She soon made up an excuse, “I saw the journal was priced at 5 dollars per copy. Is that not enough?”
“Oh! Yes, it’s enough!” Fredrick brushed aside the strange sense of familiarity he felt toward Lizzie and completed the registration.
Once the paperwork was done, Fredrick packed the materials to be translated into a brown paper envelope. Lizzie agreed to finish the translation within three days and return the draft in exchange for a new one. Then, Colton pushed Lizzie out of the bookstore.
Soon, Colton and Lizzie reached home.
When they stepped into the courtyard, they caught the aroma of freshly cooked food.

“Mom, we’re back! Is dinner ready? I’m starving!”
Glenna heard the noise and rushed out of the kitchen, her hands still wet.
“You’re back! Lizzie, how did everything go?”

Colton jumped in excitedly, “It went great! She found a translation job at the bookstore! The pay is amazing, more than what my dad earns!”
His eyes sparkled, and his voice was full of joy.
Glenna’s face lit up with both relief and pride.
“I knew it. Lizzie is amazing!”
After a few moments of joy, Glenna suddenly remembered something and asked, “Lizzie, that’s not what I meant. I was asking about the petition. How did that go?”
Lizzie gave a soft smile. “It went well.”
Her written report had been accepted, which meant it would get attention.
Glenna finally let out a breath of relief, her smile brighter.
“That’s good! You two go wash up. It’s time to eat!”
She turned back into the kitchen to finish cooking the last dish and brought it into the dining room.
Inside, Colton was still bubbling with excitement, retelling Lizzie’s “glorious story” at the bookstore to Emery.
“Dad, you should’ve seen the look on that man’s face when he saw how fast Lizzie could translate. His eyes nearly popped out!”
As he talked, Colton made a dramatic circle with his hands in front of his face, mimicking eyes bulging outward.
His exaggerated performance had the whole table laughing.
Emery was not one for many words, but he was obviously happy.
Glenna brought the dishes to the table. “Go grab the utensils from the kitchen. It’s time to eat.”
The most nutritious food on the table was a small plate of chicken, and Glenna placed it in front of Lizzie.
. Lizzie immediately caught the plate and tried to hand it back.
Glenna gave her hand a gentle slap. “You need nutrition to recover.”
She held the plate with one hand and pushed away Lizzie’s hand with the other, placing the chicken in front of Lizzie.
“Just start eating already,”
Resources were scarce in this era. People might not even get eggs at festivals, yet Glenna had cooked chicken to help

Just then, Colton walked in with some utensils. When he saw the chicken in front of Lizzie, he was totally fine with it.
As he set the table, Lizzie reached over and took Colton’s plate. “Colton is still growing. Let’s split it half and half.”
“Hey, don’t give it to him!”
“You don’t have to give it to me…”
They tried to stop her, but Lizzie insisted on giving Colton half of the chicken.
“If Colton wouldn’t eat it, I wouldn’t either.”
Glenna looked at Lizzie, and her heart ached. This girl had always been too sensible for her age. She and her brother had been like this since they were little, always afraid of being a burden. Her brother hadn’t even been as big as Colton was now when he was out collecting bricks with her to sell for money.
“This was supposed to be for you to get better…”
