Chapter 30
Fiona POV
I sober up pretty quickly after Tara’s rude words and disgusted sneers. Her outward attitude toward me is so different than how she acts toward Nolan, and it makes me want to puke.
Through the mirror, I notice that she touches him a lot. Actually, she touches him entirely too much for my liking. She always has physical contact with Nolan, either with her hand or brushing her shoulder against his.
Currently, my blood is beginning to boil because her arm is hooked through his and her head is resting on her shoulder. I didn’t think Nolan would accept her touch, but he does nothing to reject it either.
“I’ve known Nolan for years, little secretary. How long have you known him? When did you start your job?”
“Two weeks ago,” I answer quietly. I don’t want to give her more fuel to add to the fire she’s trying to start, but it would be rude not to answer. I don’t need to offend her or Nolan.
“Oh, a mere two weeks and you’re already his personal secretary,” she says dramatically. The hint of suspicion and teasing in her tone makes me sink into my seat more, and thankfully, the car rolls to a stop outside an expensive looking home.
My heart leaps with joy when Tara gets out of the car, but it also sinks when Nolan gets out as well. I watch from the confines of the car as he walks her to the door. Tara then throws her arms around Nolan, and they hug.
I turn my head away because I can’t watch them anymore, and I don’t want to see them kiss.
Nolan and I aren’t in the same world.
He and Tara are.
Billy POV
The hostility rolling off of the King is heavy, though, I’m not sure if he recognizes me. Could it be because I’m with Fiona?
He barely looked at me before he took her away, interrupting our date. Fiona went willingly, but I can’t help but feel annoyed at his work excuse.
Fiona and I had just been getting into a good conversation, and she was finally paying attention to me and not King Nolan. She was interested in my story, which I wanted to branch off from and tell her more.
Then he just had to interrupt. It wasn’t like he’d be interested in Fiona. She’s half his age and works for him. Not to mention that she doesn’t run in the same circles as the women he usually is around, like the one he was here with tonight.
I stab the last bit of broccoli on my plate and try not to imagine it’s the King’s face.
Maybe they did truly have work affairs to deal with. If so, then I have nothing to worry about, but if not… I shake my head. Fiona is a lovely woman, but I find it hard to believe that the King of public and private affairs would be interested in his little secretary.

If he was, he had no reason to hide it. That man could get any woman he wanted. He may not be as young as he once was, but women still fawn over his good looks and wealth. I just hope Fiona doesn’t fall into the same category as the women who fantasize about him.
Lifting my hand, I wave at the waitress covering our table. She comes over quickly, and I request the bill.
“Oh, I apologize. You table’s bill has already been covered by your friend,” she says politely.
“The woman I was with?” I hadn’t seen her pay or even address the waitress to do anything other than order her dinner. I also didn’t expect her to be able to afford this restaurant.
“No, sir,” she says, holding out the signed bill. King Nolan’s signature is scrawled across the bottom of the receipt, sending a trill of annoyance through me.
Not only did he steal my date, but he stole my chance to claim I’d paid.
Fiona POV
I sip on the bottle of water Nolan gave me as we enter his office. He’d been serious when he said there was work to do, if the pile of files on his desk is any indication.
“I need you to sort and organize these meeting materials tonight.
“Tonight? I thought the meeting requiring these materials wasn’t until next week,” I say as I flip through the first few pages. These are the papers I’d made copies of earlier today, but I’d been ahead of schedule.
