Chapter 25
“You are, and I wanted to thank you for stepping in earlier and for talking with me now,” I tell him sincerely. Spending the entire ride in silence would have been nerve wracking.
“No one has ever told me that before.”
“Really? Then they don’t matter,” I say, shaking my head. “I know Chloe thinks so, too, from the way she smiled at you at dinner. “Also, I want you to know that I will keep my distance from Andy. I want nothing to do with him anymore, and I don’t want Chloe to get hurt either.”
When he doesn’t say anything, I glance at Nolan and nearly gasp. The smile on his face is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and I can’t help but stare. I’ve never seen him smile in such a relaxed way.
My heart skips a beat then begins to race, but I can’t tear my eyes away from Nolan. He’s handsome, but when he smiles, that
handsomeness grows tenfold.
The rapid thumping of my heart only rachets up when a car horn blares, and I jerk into action. I put my eyes back on the road and
drive through the green light as heat floods my cheeks. Jeez. How long had I been staring at him?
I shake my head. I promised I wouldn’t let anything between us happen, and here I am drooling over him like a cat in heat.
“Turn the car around,” Nolan’s deep voice fills the quiet car.
“What? Why?” I’d driven to the front of his neighborhood, and now he wants me to turn back?
Nolan nods, “Drive back to your house first, and I’ll drive myself back after you get home.”
“I thought you wanted me to drive you home… Now you want me to go all the way back and then further away to my house.
Why?”
Again, Nolan nods, and in that calm, collected manner, he tugs on his tie. It loosens, creating little gap between his shirt and his neck as he then unbuttons the top button of his shirt. Seeing him loosen up like this feels illegal, so I quickly look away and busy myself with turning the car around.
“I was tired before,” Nolan says, and it takes a second to realize he’s answering my question. “I am well rested now and can drive
the rest of the way by myself after you are dropped off.”
“Yes, sir,” I murmur, turning onto the street that eventually leads me home. Unlike before, the quiet that falls over us is
comfortable with the light music floating on the air. It provides enough noise to not be awkward, and soon, I’m pulling up to the curb of my place.
Nolan is out of the car before me, and as I open my door, he’s there, waiting. His gaze is heavy as always, and that, combined with
the thoughtfulness of bringing me home first makes me flustered.
Is he being nice because of that night? Does he also wonder if we could be anything?

Stepping down, I gasp when my heel sinks into something. The grate that was right outside the car swallows my heel and pitches
me forward. I cry out, reeling, until Nolan’s arm wraps around me and stops me from falling.
His body heat seeps into me, sending a shiver of awareness through me.
“Let me,” he whispers.
Once I’m steady, Nolan squats down, takes my ankle gently in his hand, and pulls. His touch sends little zings of lightning up my
leg, making me bite my lip to keep from asking him to move his touch upward.

I try not to think about it, about how his touch feels, about how handsome he looks with the moonlight shining down on him, but
I can’t help it. He’s the most handsome man I’ve ever seen, and it does things to me.
“You’re alright now,” Nolan says, and I nod, moving away from the grate and closer to him. I still can’t take my eyes off him,
even as he stands to his full height to peer down at me.
In that moment, I realize one thing.
I’m incredibly and irrevocably attracted to Nolan- my boss and my ex’s father–in–law.
