Chapter 10
Fiona POV
My fingers brush the edge of the glass containing the last traces of Black Ivory beans in the office. I push up onto my toes, trying
⚫and failing to reach the container.
“I don’t know whether to be sorry for King Nolan or to see this as an opportunity,” a woman’s voice says from outside the office pantry. I freeze at the mention of King Nolan and find myself holding my breath so I can hear their next words.
“His daughter just got married, and there’s a rumor going around that his ex–wife didn’t even show up,” a different woman’s
voice says. She doesn’t sound familiar, but that doesn’t mean anything. I haven’t been here long.
One of them giggles, the sound grating and obnoxious.
“Must mean he’s free for the rest of us to take a shot at. I, for one, would love to see what’s underneath that fitted suit,” the first
woman says with an exaggerated hum.
“As if. He’s always working and doesn’t take time to form connections. That’s why his ex–wife left him,” the second woman tells
the first. I lean in a bit, suddenly interested. I knew Nolan had an ex–wife and a daughter, but I don’t know much more than that.
“King Nolan is the biggest workaholic I’ve ever seen,” the second woman continues. “His ex–wife once publicly accused him of
being cold–hearted.”
Her words spark a bit of annoyance in me. Did his mate expect him to stay home and lounge around all day? He’s a King and the boss of an entire company. Of course, he works overtime and late hours.
It seems like a common occurrence to me, so maybe there was more going on? If his own mate was so busy, he wouldn’t be able to
stand it either, right?
“I wonder if he’s become so frigid because of his abstinence?”
And that’s my queue. I grab the coffee beans and slip out of the pantry unnoticed. I don’t need to listen to any more of their
conversation because I don’t want to be here if they begin talking about specifics.
While I make Nolan’s coffee, I try to keep my mind off of his personal life. I let the monotonous task clear my mind, and before I
know it, I’m knocking on his office door with a freshly brewed cup of coffee in my hands.
The door flies open, and Nolan is right there in front of me, blocking my path into the room. He glances at the coffee then at me.
“Put it on the desk. I want you to take the minutes for my meeting,” he says, passing me a laptop. My mind stumbles over itself as
I put the coffee cup down and follow him out of the office.
“This isn’t really my area of expertise,” I tell him. I can take notes, but I know nothing about this meeting. The short notice also
doesn’t give me time to familiarize myself with the details of the meeting or the content. “I feel like there should be someone
who is more familiar with the company than me.”

Nate joins us as we walk down the hallway, leaning in and whispering, “The secretary who was in charge of the meeting has been fired for trying to seduce the King.”
I whip my head up, my mouth dropping open.
“I promise I know the difference and the gap between King Nolan and I. The line that separates us is not one I will cross,” I immediately say, when he looks at me with raised eyebrows. My words don’t seem to comfort him; in fact, it seems to make him look a bit helpless.
Nolan, who is standing on the other side of Nate, looks at me with a knowing gaze before turning and walking into the meeting
room. His silence speaks louder than words, and I drop my gaze as I follow him into the room.
The King sits at the head of the table full of people, leaving only one chair open. The one directly to his left.
Everyone in the room is talking, and their eyes follow the King, watching as he sits and going quiet when he opens the file folder
in front of him. I realize they’re waiting for his instructions, their eyes shining with trust and awe.
