Something clatters behind me, and I jump.
“Get in the car, Fiona.”
I turn and look at Nolan then at Nate, wondering if I’d imagined Nolan’s voice.
Instead of arguing, I pull the back door open and climb in. There’s no way I’m standing out here in the dark while waiting to be
jumped or worse. I’ll take my chances with Nolan and his cold shoulder.
“Thank you,” I murmur while buckling in.
“What is your address? We’ll make sure you get there quickly,” Nate says, peering back at me.
“I rent a little place in the District Seven Apartments downtown,” I answer. The driver, Nate, and Nolan’s eyes all land on me the
moment the words are out of my mouth, and I have to bite my tongue not to cringe.
The frown that pulls at Nolan’s lips confuses me, but he speaks up before I can fully process the emotions.
“That’s not a well–protected area. Is this the kind of place you prefer to live in?”
Seriously? I want to laugh, but at the same time, I want to cry. My words, unfiltered, tumble out of my mouth, “It’s not like I want
to live there. I’m poor and this is the only place I can afford. I don’t expect a King to understand.”
Nolan’s brow ticks up, and I curse myself. I shouldn’t have said that last part. I swear I used to have better control over my tongue
and what comes out of my mouth, but apparently, when I get around Nolan, I lose my mind.
Something flashes in Nolan’s eyes as he speaks, “But I guess even poor people have money for a call boy and a night of—”
“That’s because you’re too hot!”
Crap. There I go again, blurting out without thinking. I throw my hands up, as if that could erase the words hanging between us. I didn’t think he’d mention that, especially in front of other people.
Heat rushes to my cheeks, and I groan, covering them by burying my face in my hands. Completely stupid. I should just throw the door open and jump. That would be less embarrassing than sitting here after saying that.
A chuckle sounds from beside me, and I gawk. He’s laughing?
The embarrassment flames hotter, making me scoot further away from Nolan. Is he making fun of me? Of course, he is. I’m poor
and ridiculous.
Crazy.
Yep. He’s going to fire me for sure after this. There’s no saving my job.
“I have a friend who is looking to rent out a vacant apartment here in the Inner District,” Nate says, grabbing my attention again.

“It’s near the company, so you wouldn’t have to travel as far to get home or to work. My friend would also rent it to you at the employee rate.”
Is he serious? Surprise and hope fill me, and I stare at Nate for a minute. His serious expression doesn’t change, which tells me he’s completely serious.
“I- that would be amazing. Thank you,” I agree, nodding. With a workaholic boss like Nolan, I’ll definitely be working overtime more often, and having a home closer to the company would be great.
Nolan POV
Nate glances at Fiona as she moves away from the car. I look out through the window, Nate moving to my side as she walks up the main pathway to the wreck she calls an apartment building.
Our private mind link opens, his voice filtering into my mind, “If you’re interested in her, why don’t you just say so. No woman in the world will reject you!”
I shake my head with a scoff.
“She’s just my secretary. I’m not interested in a public or private office romance,” I tell him, no longer watching Fiona’s retreating figure.
“Should I tell Ms. Fiona that the apartment is actually’s?”
“I think you’ve said enough for tonight,” I growl.
