Chapter 7
It’s almost peaceful.
Or it was, until a hand slaps down on my desktop.
“Did you chase me here just to get my attention?” Andy asks, leaning into my personal space. I try to roll my chair back, but his free hand grabs the back of it, forcing me to stay put. Honestly, I’m surprised he took the initiative to approach me.
Idiot.
“It has nothing to do with you. I’m working here now, and I’d like it if you left me to do my work,” I tell him, speaking in with a blank, uninterested tone. I was serious about not wanting to see him again, especially if he’s going to act like the world always
revolves around him.
Andy leans in, lowering his voice as he gets too close, “I’m surprised the King would tolerate someone with a criminal history as
his secretary.”
I stop typing, and Andy chuckles.
“Didn’t tell him, did you?”
I don’t dignify his victory with a response. Instead, I continue typing.
“Stop killing yourself for a paycheck. I can give you way more if you resign and become my lover. If you come obediently, I can
bring things back to the way they used to be. We can go back to the old days and—”
“The old days?” I hiss, finally turning to look at him. “I never want to go back to the ‘old days‘ with you. The old days left me with
three years of torture and pain.”
Andy’s eyes flare to life, and the hand on the back of my chair jerks me forward.
“If you don’t, I’ll expose your criminal past and you’ll be sacked just the same,” he threatens.
“No, Andy. You have no power over me,” I mutter softly while standing and pushing him back. Several eyes fly to us, but with one quick glance from me, they lower their heads and mind their own business. “Does the King know that his son–in–saw is a piece of
trash when he’s in private?”
I grab a file that needs copying and make my way toward the copy–room. Just as I enter the hallway, Andy growls behind me, reaching out for me. I push his hand away, noting the flash of anger in his eyes and the tick of his jaw.
Again, I bat his hand away when he tries to grab me as turn the corner, but he moves faster than I anticipate. Before I know it, I’m backed against the wall of the copy room with a forearm to my neck.
“You’d better keep your mouth shut,” Andy snarls. “The King won’t believe you over me, so don’t come crying to me in the
future when he finds out about your crimes.”

As I gasp for air and look into Andy’s eyes, I realize he’s right. Why would the King believe me over his family? He already sees me
as the woman who is trying to get ahead by having sex with him.
Pushing my hands against Andy’s chest, I finally get him off of me long enough to run back to my desk. Luckily, he doesn’t
follow, and I find myself slumping into my chair.
- I need to stay as far away from what’s going on between them as possible if I want to keep my job. Andy is just crazy enough to do
what he threatened, while the King… I’m sure he’d take the opportunity to fire me without a second thought.
Shaking my head, I turn back to my computer and take a deep breath. Mind my business and keep my job. That’s what I’ll do.
The message box at the bottom of my screen dings, and when I open it, it’s a message from Nolan’s Beta Nate. Up top the
message is the address of Nolan’s residence, and I freeze.
Is this some kind of invitation?
I feel my heart pounding uncontrollably.
