Chapter 4
“What are you doing back here again?”
I leaned against the cabinet, trying way too hard to change the subject.
Marcus walked over, raising his hand.[]
But instead of getting angry, he wiped the corner of my eye.[]
“You’ve been crying?”
He stared at the moisture on his fingers, completely caught off guard.[]
I gave him a small smile and shrugged it off.
“Pregnancy hormones.“]]
“Makes you weepy for no reason. I’ll be fine.“]
Marcus let out a breath of relief.]
“Good. I forgot to ask–what kind of christening charm do you like?”
“How about a cross with angel wings?”
“Something simple feels right these days.“]
I paused, not expecting him to care that much.]
If only he had cared this much before.
“Sure. You can pick it.”
He nodded and turned to go.]]
But just before shutting the door, he hesitated.
“You’re really okay?“]]
I opened my mouth, and for some stupid reason, hope crept in.[]
“What if I’m not? Would you stay with me?“]
Marcus paused, then gave a small laugh.
“Olivia, come on. Don’t be dramatic.”
“Emma’s waiting at the hospital.“]
“Get some rest tonight, alright? I’m heading out.”
ut.“0
The door clicked shut, and I finally broke down.[]
Crying because I was blind enough to marry Marcus.
Crying harder because, even now, some part of me still hoped he’d change.
Even though I already knew the answer, didn’t I?
That night, I packed up everything I owned.[]
The divorce papers hadn’t come through yet []
But I was done. Totally, completely done.[]
Before bed. I emptied out the jar of soybeans and soaked them overnight.]
The next morning, I ate a warm, mushy soybean porridge and got a message from Marcus]

Chapter 4
He’d sent someone to tell me the christening charm was ready.
He said I could pick it up at the hospital.[]
I went straight to Emma’s room.]
Marcus wasn’t there–probably out grabbing lunch or something.
Emma smiled at me as I walked in.[]
“Looking for Marcus?“]
1 forced a polite smile.[]
“I’m here for the christening charm.“]]
“Do you know where he put it?”
Emma let out this fake little “Oh!” and pulled her blanket back to show her ankle.[]
She had a thin cord tied around it–with a tiny charm hanging off it.]

cross with angel wings.
Exactly what Marcus had promised me.
“This one?”
“Marcus gave it to me for my ankle. Cute, right?“[]
She was smiling so proudly, but I was falling apart inside.[]
My baby was gone.]
My husband didn’t love me.]]
And all I wanted was a simple christening charm.
Something to give the baby who never got a chance to be born.
Something… so he could go to heaven with a blessing from his dad.[]
I don’t even remember how I left the hospital.[]
By the time I got home, my throat was wrecked from crying.]
I couldn’t make a single sound]
Back at the house, I pulled out a sheet of paper and started making a list.
Things I hadn’t finished yet.
Stuff I hoped Marcus would handle, just once, for the sake of what we were.
When I was sure I hadn’t missed anything, I grabbed my bags and walked out of the military base housing
The guard, just coming on shift, tried to help me with my suitcase.]
I politely refused.
From now on, this road-
I wanted to walk it alone.]
Meanwhile, Marcus had just gotten back with takeout.
He set the containers down.[]
“Hey Emma, did Olivia stop by while I was out?
Emma tucked her foot back under the covers, smiling sweetly

Chapter 4
“Nope. No one came by.“]]
Marcus nodded, pulling open the lunchbox.
“Let’s eat. Did you put the charm somewhere safe for me?“]]
“I’m heading to Olivia’s later. I’ll bring it then.“]]
Emma nodded, reaching for the food.
Then someone knocked.]
A nurse walked in, looking around the room.]
“Is one of you Olivia Bennett’s family?”
“She left her meds behind–miscarriage–related.“[]
The lunchbox hit the floor with a loud clatter.]].
Food spilled everywhere, but no one cared.[]
Marcus jumped up, stunned.]
“Wait… what did you just say?“[]
The nurse flinched, confused by his reaction.[]
“You family? Olivia was admitted a few days ago.” “0
“Miscarriage. She forgot her medication.“]]
“I saw her walk out of this room, so I came to check.”
“Which one of you is her next of kin?”
Marcus opened his mouth, but the color drained from his face.
“I… I’m her husband.“]
The nurse’s expression turned ice–cold in a heartbeat.[]
She looked him up and down with contempt.[]
“You’re that deadbeat husband of hers?”
“She’s been in the hospital all this time, and you never showed up once? Wow.”
Marcus blinked, trying to form words.
“I… I didn’t know she lost the baby…”
The nurse scoffed.]
“She’s been here for days.”
“What kind of husband doesn’t notice?“[]
She glanced around the room–at the kettle, the pillows, the signs that someone had been living here.[]
“Looks like you’ve been camping out here with another woman.“[]
“And you never thought to ask where your wife was?“]
“What she was going through?“]
With each word, the nurse hit him like a freight train.[]
His face went from pale to blue to pure agony.]
He remembered seeing me that day at the hospital]
Chapter 4
How pale I’d looked.]
The soup I brought home that night.
I said, “Mia made it for me.“[]
Turns out…
That soup was for me.]]
Because I had just-
Marcus slammed his fist into the wall, breath catching in his throat.]
The nurse scowled.[]
“Hey! This is a hospital. Get a grip.”
“What the hell is your problem?” Emma snapped.]]
She had just found out about my miscarriage too.
Watching Marcus fall apart like this made her panic.[]
The nurse folded her arms, expression full of disdain.]
“My problem? You people have no shame.“]
“You–you’re his sister or something?”
“Couldn’t be bothered to check in on your sister–in–law?“]
Emma froze.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“I’m not his sister. I’m-‘

“What are you?”
The nurse narrowed her eyes.[]
Emma bit her lip, sneaking a glance at Marcus.[]
“I’m… a childhood friend.“]
The nurse dropped her tray with a loud bang and sneered.
“Well that explains it.“]
“Homewrecking trash.”
“No wonder the man didn’t care his wife lost the baby.”
“Disgusting.”
“You two should be reported.“]
“Sent to one of those moral reform camps or something.”
Emma jumped to her feet, finger trembling as she pointed at the nurse.]
“You–you–what did you just say?! Say it again!“]
The nurse stood her ground, hands on her hips.[]
“Trash. The both of you.”
Emina had never been humiliated like this before–not since her depression diagnosis.
People always handled her with kid gloves.

She grabbed a book off the nightstand and hurled it at her.

Marcus finally snapped out of it, just in time to see the whole thing explode.[]
