Chapter 18
Connor narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
“You’re serious right now?“]
Grayson pushed his glasses up with the back of his hand and smiled.]
“About this? Dead serious.“]
Connor took a deep breath and studied his friend of many years, carefully considering.
He realized he couldn’t come up with a single valid objection.[]
“She just got divorced.“]
“Correct. She is officially divorced.“[]
Connor’s mouth twisted into a grimace.[]
“All these years, and I never realized what a sneaky bastard you are!“]
Grayson ignored the comment, smiling with casual indifference as Connor stormed out to his car. Halfway out of the estate, Connor suddenly remembered why he’d come in the first place–to ask Ophelia if she’d consider meeting Bastien just once to get him to leave. Having that creep staking out their house was getting old.
He turned the car around and drove back.[]
Ophelia nodded at her brother’s suggestion.]
That afternoon, feeling somewhat stronger, she changed clothes and put on a hat. Grayson drove her to a coffee shop, then waited nearby.
After ordering a dessert, Ophelia texted Bastien the address.]]
The café was a good distance from home. Twenty minutes later, Bastien arrived.]]
When he spotted Ophelia in the corner, he practically sprinted over.
“Ophelia.”
She looked at him with an expression so calm it was almost unsettling.
“What do you want to drink?“]
Bastien ordered a coffee.]
Before he could speak, Ophelia started Connor says you’ve been camping outside our house for over two weeks. Is Anastasia still threatening suicide?”
Bastien looked startled, then replied, “So you’re still upset about Anastasia?“]
Ophelia laughed without humor. “I shouldn’t have brought her up.“]
“Bastien, I never thought conversations with you would feel like talking to a brick wall.“]
His face darkened at her words as he studied her intently.]
She seemed to have gained a little weight, but still looked fragile. The hat was unusual–she never used to wear them. And her long hair was gone.[]
As he was about to ask about it, she cut him off.
“I’m here now. You can ask what you want.”
She glanced at her watch. “I’m tired and want to rest. Forty minutes, max.”
Cap 18
Bastien’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he loosened his tie, leaning forward slightly, hands clasped together.
“So you didn’t love me.right?“]
Ophelia nodded. “That’s right.”
“Why?”
She actually laughed out loud, looking at him with genuine confusion. “Why do you think, Bastien?”
“Because of Anastasia? There’s nothing between us–I was just helping her through a difficult situation.“]]
“Really? You needed to divorce me to help her?“]
“I don’t want to listen any fucking words from you.“]
“I’m sorry.Please Ophelia.“]
Ophelia shook her head slightly. She was beyond caring now.
One “sorry” from Bastien meant nothing anymore. After divorced,no more apologies needed.[]
