Chapter 5
I had specifically asked which hospital the ambulance was headed to.[]
Now I floored the gas pedal all the way there, terrified I might miss Nathan if I arrived too late.
When I mentioned I was Aiden’s teacher, the nurse helpfully directed me to his room.[]
To avoid being recognized, I’d deliberately worn a hat before leaving home.[]
Pulling the brim low, I approached the hospital room and casually glanced inside.
Sure enough, Nathan was there, his back to the door, expression hidden from view.
But Tessa’s face was clearly unhappy.
Aiden was fast asleep. Nathan spoke in hushed tones, but I could still hear every word from my eavesdropping position.]]
“Tessa, I already told you–I’m extremely busy right now. You can’t keep calling me like this.“[]
Tessa immediately went into victim mode: “You’re his father! Who am I supposed to call if not you? Your son is injured and you don’t even care? What kind of father are you?“]
“Okay, okay, don’t be upset,” Nathan said, pulling her into an embrace. “It’s my fault. You’ve been handling everything with our son on your own. I’m sorry.“] “Here, take my card and buy yourself something nice as my apology. How does that sound?“||
“Fine, I’ll forgive you this time, but don’t let it happen again.“[]”
While they were lost in their moment, I quickly pulled out my phone and snapped a picture of them in their tight embrace.
Tessa pulled away, looking at Nathan with hopeful eyes: “So when are you planning to divorce Claire?“|
Standing outside the door, I suddenly felt a rush of excitement.]
But Nathan didn’t immediately agree: “Tessa, you to explain that to my family?“]]
know my marriage was arranged by our parents. If I just up and divorce her for no reason, how am I supposed
Tessa pouted. “So you’re fine with me and our son only child.”

Nathan rubbed his temples, eventually giving in to Tessa
“These things take time. I’ll work on it as soon as possible.“[
“Anyway, it’s getting late. I have a mountain of work waiting for me at the office. Hire a caretaker, okay? Don’t exhaust yourself. I should go.” Nathan rambled on with a bunch of sweet nothings to Tessa that made me want to gag.]
I kept my hat low and quickly escaped through the emergency stairwell. It wouldn’t look good if Nathan discovered I wasn’t home. When Nathan returned home, he was strangely calm–showing no signs of wanting to discuss divorce. Instead, he was unusually attentive.[] He held my face and examined it, saying I looked thinner and asking if work was too stressful.]
Meanwhile, I’d actually gained a few pounds from all the junk food I’d been enjoying during the times Nathan was either at work or with Tessa Since he wouldn’t bring up divorce, I lost interest in the conversation and headed upstairs, burying myself under the covers.]
He followed me to bed and pulled my back against his chest. I wasn’t in the mood, so I pretended to be asleep. Time continued to pass this way.[] Soon, our wedding anniversary arrived, but as luck would have it. I received a last–minute notification about a mandatory parent teacher conference.[]
I texted Nathan explaining I’d be home late, so we’d have to postpone our celebration until evening
Nathan had no objections, saying he was working late anyway and wouldn’t be free until night.[]
I put my phone away and returned to the classroom to prepare for the conference. This was my first time hosting one, and I felt a bit nervous.]
As time passed, parents gradually filled the classroom, but Aiden’s seat remained empty.
Would Tessa really miss this rare opportunity to show off?

I was confused but didn’t dwell on it.]
When it was time to start the conference and Tessa still hadn’t shown up, I couldn’t keep the other parents waiting any longer and decided to begin.]
Just then, a familiar figure entered my field of vision.
“I’m sorry I’m late, ma’am. I’m Aiden’s father…”
