“It’s gone now. Lucas, you haven’t done your duty as a husband for a single day, so you would definitely not have been a good
father.”
Lucas looked struck. He stood in place without moving.
Right then, his assistant rushed in through the door.
“Mr. Devine, we’re in trouble. Everyone’s saying that you abandoned your wife. We can’t suppress public opinion any longer.”
Lucas’s gaze turned sharp, and he chastised the man. “Why didn’t you tell me about it? And why didn’t you call me about the
earthquake the second it happened?”
The assistant, Bernard Johnson, gulped. His expression was resigned.
“Ms. Cobb said not to disturb you when you and her were spending time alone together, not even if the sky was falling.
“She also said that if we dare to upset her, she’d immediately fire and blacklist us.”
Lucas’s expression turned frigid. He frowned as he looked at the news.
His behavior had started trending long ago.
Everyone was criticizing and calling him out. Some scolded Shevonne as well. Others were calling them the worst couple of the year. Lucas’s hard–won reputation as a kind person was ruined in a day.
After a moment, Lucas looked up from the phone and focused on me. His lips moved as if he had something to say.
Before he could speak, Shevonne tottered into the room in her heels.
“Lucas, I heard what happened and rushed over to comfort you. Elise, how could you pay money to get Lucas trending? How
could you frame us this way?
“Even if you don’t love Lucas anymore, you’re still married right now. Have you considered what this would do to Lucas?”
I was so angered by Shevonne’s twisting of the truth that I trembled.
“By your logic, I arranged that earthquake. I even predicted that you would try to kill me, is that right?”
Shevonne shrunk into Lucas’s embrace at my shouting. Meanwhile, Lucas looked enraged.
