Lucas hurriedly went to the bedside table to flip through my file. Right then, Shevonne suddenly clutched her tummy.
“Lucas, I think the baby is kicking me.”
Lucas abandoned his task and quickly held Shevonne in his embrace.
Meanwhile, my gaze slowly shifted to stare at Shevonne’s tummy.
I suddenly felt the irony of the situation.
I thought that Lucas had at least been loyal to me.
Apparently, my marriage had been rotten from the very start.
Lucas was so worried about Shevonne’s condition that he lifted her up in a bridal carry.
The stunned nurses around us finally came back to themselves. They rushed over to help me back onto the bed.

“Ms. Avignon, please don’t let them upset you. You just had a miscarriage and can’t get worked up.”
I nodded silently. With the help of painkillers, I quickly went back to sleep.
In my dreams, I returned to the scene of the earthquake.

I was standing on a crack in the ground while Lucas stood on stable land, protecting Shevonne. He watched coolly as I slowly slipped into the darkness of the fracture.
When I awoke again, it was dark outside.
Lucas’s and Josie’s voices drifted from the door.
“How long will you protect her, Mom? Do you know that she ruined Shevonne’s future?”
“Then do you know that I nearly died overseas?”
“What nonsense are you talking about? What’s this about dying overseas?”
Josie paused. Then, I heard a ringing slap.
“Lucas, you’ve really been brainwashed by Shevonne. Do you still not know that there was an earthquake? We called you, but you
said she was just tricking you. Well, is the news trying to trick you too?”
Silence reigned.
After some time, the door to my ward opened.
Lucas walked briskly to the side of my bed and looked at me in shock.
“Why didn’t you tell me, Elise? If you explained it, I would have never played such a prank!”
I was wrung out and did not want to waste my breath on him.
“I did tell you. And it wasn’t just me. Josie told you, along with the other tourists stuck at the airport with us. Lucas, have you ever
believed a single thing I’ve said?
“You haven’t. You claimed it was a prank when Shevonne cut the rope ladder. At that point, you were even laughing with her.
Meanwhile, I broke my leg and lost my child.”
Lucas’s gaze slowly moved to my tummy.
“We had a child?”
After saying that, he looked pleadingly at Josie. She nodded with a tight expression.
