The smile on Josie’s face turned rigid. Even the tourists who had been shoving and pushing their way onto the planes looked over at me, oddly in sync.
Everyone knew that the president of the Devine Group, Lucas Devine, did not love his wife. His heart belonged to Shevonne Cobb.
Faced with the rumors, Lucas had forced me to make statements to clarify the issue many times. I had to say that I am Shevonne’s friend to preserve her good name.
Some people took out their phones to record my personal confession about where I stood in this relationship.
Josie lowered her gaze awkwardly.
“Don’t worry, Elise. Once we get back, I’ll teach him a lesson. I’ll make sure he cuts things off with that woman once and for all!”
Though I could feel the warmth of her hand in mine, all I could think about was the pain before my death last time.
To avenge Shevonne, Lucas had killed me with his own two hands. There was no way that the two of them would ever split up.
“I’m fine, Josie.”
I had barely managed to say it when Lucas’s scolding came through the phone.
“What are you playing at, Elise? I only asked you to accompany my mother to an auction. How have you managed to make it into an excuse as well?
“An earthquake? There’s no such thing happening! Do you have people spying on me? There’s no way you could have chosen this exact moment to call if you did not. You’re ruining my outing with Shevonne!”
Josie’s expression filled with shock. She yelled into the phone, “Have you gone mad, Lucas?! Why would Elise lie to you about such an important thing?!”
Lucas let out a tired sigh.
“Why are you going along with Elise’s tricks, Mom?
“Alright, I get that she doesn’t like me being with Shevonne, but it’s Shevonne’s dream to see the city’s scenery from above at night, and it’s her birthday today. I can’t disappoint her.”
After saying that, Lucas hung up.
Josie clutched her chest and fainted before she could chastise Lucas for being a bad son.
By that point, the first group of people had been evacuated. The other rescue team came over to us as well.
“Ms. Avignon, I’m sorry. Your family arrived by a private plane. Our rescue team was not informed about your presence, so we did not leave you seats on the plane.
“At the moment, there is only one seat left. If Mr. Devine really isn’t coming to get you, only one of you can…”
