Chapter 8
The private investigator finally had a breakthrough, so Grandma and I rushed to his office. He handed me an envelope and
explained, “I found the woman who abandoned Nancy–her biological mother, Vera Powell.”
He continued, “Less than a month after Vera abandoned Nancy, Peter adopted her.
Grandma’s fists clenched in rage, and she growled, “That bastard! He told us his ex–wife was dead! He clearly planned for Nancy
to take over everything that belonged to Rissa!”
The investigator pulled out more documents. “There’s something even more shocking–Peter and Vera never got divorced.”
I quickly grabbed the copied photos showing Peter and Vera together, back when his name was still Jimmy Truman.
He had changed his name twice–first to Peter Truman when he was pursuing my mother, Tanya Holmes. Then, he did it again to
take the Holmes name after marriage.
I told Grandma firmly, “This is bigamy and marriage fraud! His marriage to Mom was never valid!”
The investigator then showed us more photos. He pointed to a woman driving and said, “These are a bit blurry, but after
enhancement, we can identify the people. This is Vera, and the child in the passenger seat should be you.”
As I studied the photo, fragments of memories from when I was six years old began to surface in my mind. I mumbled, “I think
that’s me…”
Grandma choked back tears as she confirmed, “That’s definitely you, Rissa.”
The evidence proved Vera had deliberately kidnapped me as part of their plan. I immediately went to the police and leaked the
information to a reporter contact.
A few hours after I had handed the evidence to a trusted tabloid journalist, the entire internet was abuzz with the truth about
Peter’s family. Outrage poured in from every corner as comments flooded in.
Someone commented, “The gold–digger will do anything to climb the ladder! He even helped his wife abduct the real heiress!”
“That fake heiress had the nerve to lecture Rissa about rules? This is infuriating!”
