Chapter 6
Just then, the sound of urgent high heels echoed through the hallway, growing closer until they stopped outside the door.
My heart warmed at the familiar rhythm–it was my adoptive mother, the award–winning actress and renowned director,
Ophelia Lincoln.
The door opened to reveal Mom’s worried face, which only relaxed when she saw me. Before she could speak, Nancy rushed
forward with star–struck eyes.
She exclaimed, “Oh my! You’re Ms. Ophelia Lincoln! What brings you here?”
Then, she spun toward Jason excitedly. “Jason, did you arrange this for me? I want to start acting too. Is that why she’s here?”
Jason shot me a smug look and nodded. “Holmes Group has extensive connections. I’ll support whatever you want to do,
someone who has to sell her body to get ahead.”
unlike
Mom’s expression darkened. “Sell her body?”
Nancy faked a sickeningly sweet tone. “Oh, Ms. Lincoln, don’t you know? Clarissa here starred in an X–rated film right after graduation! How else could someone with her limited talent become famous?”
Before Grandma could react to Nancy’s accusations, Mom exploded in anger. She shouted, “Who taught you to insult art like this? Besides, Rissa used a professional body double in that film! Where do you get off spreading such lies?”
