ragdoll. Riley glared at me while also laughing maniacally.
“Summer, I’m Luke’s first love! I’m the one who got pregnant first! But why are you the one who managed to capture his heart?
“You’re the one who chose to leave, but he took out all his anger on me. Do you have any idea how hellish my life has been? What
right do you have to live comfortably? I hate both of you!”
I shook my head. “I never planned to fight you for him this time. I just wanted to live my own life.”
Riley wanted to lunge at me, but she was subdued by the bodyguards and pinned to the ground. The ambulance and police cars. arrived soon in a loud cacophony of sirens. Luke was still alive, but barely, as he was transported into the ambulance.
Meanwhile, Riley, who had been cursing up a storm, was escorted away in the police car.
Caleb’s body was still taut with tension. His heart hammered against his ribcage. “Thank goodness, you’re okay.”
I returned his hug and patted his shivering back soothingly. “It’s over now.”
During my month–long break, I didn’t visit Luke even once. I didn’t want to give him any hope that our relationship could be rekindled. A month later, with the sun shining relentlessly down on us, the expedition team departed once more.
My phone chimed, notifying me that I had received a message. It was from Luke and it read, “Goodbye.”
When my phone reconnected to the internet, I found out that the message had been Luke’s final words before he passed away. Riley was convicted of attempted homicide and sentenced to a lifetime in prison. 1
When we made it to the North Point research station, the sky was lit up by a spectacular aurora that dyed everything it touched in a green hue. Caleb stood beneath the starry sky and offered his hand to me.
I didn’t hesitate as I stepped forward and took his hand.
